A pure Chags and Zags collumn

Today because after being pressured to create an updated blog by the ninjas I figured that I'd do a pure Chags and Zags collumn today.
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Zags to a ninja for taking a slam at myself and Justin, that was uncalled for in your blog
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Zags for the people who think that Brock Lesnar will have an NFL Career. The Next big thing as he was called in the WWE, he did so much so fast there and was great, now he's on the bottom where he's going to stay and he'll be back intime for Survivor Series
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Zags to the Boston Red Sox, how can you lose a game to the Balitmore Orioles. Come on Sox wake up.
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Chags to the D-Backs who aren't going to trade Randy Johnson.
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Zags to all the fans who want to trade away Derek Lowe, do we forget what he does for us every year in August and beyond
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Zags to people who think that they are having a worst trip than i did, but then again if you hate to fly and you have to fly anywhere that will be a bad trip, but atleast those tires didn't blow out
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Chags to the Cardinals who are now 10.5 games up on the Cubbies.
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Chags to NY for wanting to tear down yankee Stadium, does this mean that without this stadium the Curse will be lifted. in that case tear the damn thing down.
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Well that's the blog for today leave some

The Trip from can I say Hell

I'm going to not have a sports blog today to share with you guys the vacation from hell.

This past weekend was supposted to be a fun trip to Cape Cod to relax and escape the pressures of everyday life, well that plan was quickly thrown out the window. My family leaves on Friday morning early so that we can beat the traffic because the bridge to Cape Cod can be horriable late in the day, so we're off and then all of a sudden we hear a boom, boom, boom, and wouldn't you know it we blew our back tire out. I mean we have pictures of this thing and I don't know how we didn't spin out. So I get out since my dad wasn't able to change a tire, due to he just had dialysis an hour earlier, so I change the tire and guess what the damn spare tire is flat. So off to call Liberty Road Side assistance to see if they can get a tow truck over here, then we also called 911. Well needless to say that 3.5 hours later we finally had a tow truck. So off to a gas station to see if we can get a new tire and a new spare, well the first place we go, well let me back up. I have a family of 4 and you had to see 5 of us inside of a tow truck that was built to hold only 3 people. So we all by some act of God fit in the tow truck so we go off to the first place, and we see that there are no cars so we figure great, we can be back on the road quickly, well we ask the guy can you take us in, and the moron says sure but I can't work on the car for 3 hours. We look around and we still don't see any cars, so we repackage ourselves into the tow truck and we drive down to another place where they take us right in and they order the tires and that takes another 2 hours. So we finally take off and then we hit Boston, well we forget the damn DNC (Democratic National Convention) is in town and that tied up that bridge for an hour or so. So finally after that we're off and we're flying down to the cape and then we hit Cape Cod traffic, 2 hours it took to get over the bridge to Cape Cod, keeping in mind that we were supposted to meet a friend of my dad's at 6 for dinner, wrong that didn't happen, more like Ice Cream at 9:30. Anyway after that ice cream we go to the hotel from hell. I swear my bed at home is bigger than the beds in this hotel, so needless to say I slept on the cold, rock hard, damp, floor.
So after a nice 30 minute night sleep we're off to breakfast with my dad's sister. And then a family reunion, since when do you invite neighbors to family reunions. Well with that being said my cousin, not the one in those pictures all the ninjas have seen, invited his neighbors over and wouldn't you know what a small world it is, one of my ex-girlfriends summer house would be right next door to my cousins. Oh that was a blast to say the least, I was so happy to see her again. Thankfully my family is very quick on their feet, well then again this person I'm about to talk about wasn't family. I'm going to my car to check on the Sox game and my ex walks out with me to try to start up a conversation. Then this girl from the reunion, who for the record isn't related to me, comes out and wants to know why Sarah, my ex, is talking to her boyfriend. Then all hell broke loose, I just sat back and watched, I was complaining about Sarah the whole time and then this person comes to my rescue. Which was the only bright spot of the whole vacation. I was just happy to get her number.
So that night my family goes to a stakehouse, wouldn't you know it but my piece of prime rib wasn't cooked and I got sick.
This morning, after another nice night sleep on the floor, I wake up and I'm ready to go to Martha's vineyard wrong. The forecast said that the water may be too chopy so they didn't want to send any boats out. So my vacation very quickly ended and my family packed up and returned from the vacation from hell.

Cardinals Hitting and Fielding Report

It's time boys and girls for the St. Louis Cardinals hitting and Fielding Report, it probably isn't fair to be doing this right after Albert hits 3 home runs last night in a game that I turned off after the Cubs took an 8-2 lead. Anyway let's get on with the First Place Cardinals hitting and Fielding Report. The cardinals this year have been a power house by not only being able to hit home runs but by being able to steal bases. The team is batting a .279 which is best in the National League, they have scored 500 runs (2nd in NL), 889 hits (2nd in NL), 122 home runs (most in NL). 194 doubles(2nd in NL) to go with 8 triples (last in Baseball), they've driven in 483(best in NL) while stealing 63 bags(3rd in NL). And they have a .342 OBP(4th in NL) with a .459 slugging percentage (2nd in NL). But besides the fact that they don't hit many triples they still are in the top 4 in every other major hitting category. This team is never out of a game and they proved that last night.
/*-/*-/*-/*/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
And their fielding isn't that bad, they have 54 errors in 93 games, which is something that they could use some work on. Tony Womack is the one of the team who needs the most work as he has 9 errors, Renteria has 7 and a big surprise to me is that Pujols has 6 errors. If these guys can make less errors then they are going to continue to run away with the Central. But they can't take this too lightly since errors kill in the playoffs when you usually don't have 4 chances.

Red Sox Hitting and Fielding report Card

/*-/*-/*-/*/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*
In today's Blog we're going to take a look back at the Red Sox hitting and Fielding and how it stacks up against other teams.
Let's start with the great defense that the Red Sox have. They already have 72 errors, in 29 games Nomah already has 5 errors, that's almost an error every 6 games. That's much too high for any shortstop. Take Pokey in 66 games he has 6 errors, that an error every 11 games or about one every other week, that's not too bad seeing all of the amazing catches that he does make that other second basemen and shortstops couldn't ever be able to make.
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-

AH How did that get up here, well anyways. (Ok for some reason this picture isn't showing up at this time, check back later and maybe it'll pop up.)
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*/*-/*-/*-/*-
Quickly moving over to the batting side of the Sox, as a team they're hitting a .278 which ties them with the Cardinals for 5th best in baseball. They have scored 496 runs which is 3rd in baseball. 881 hits, which is 4th best in baseball. They also have 124 home runs which is 4th best in baseball. the Sox lead the major leagues with a .358 on base percentage. Manny Ramirez is third in the AL with a .342 batting average. He leads the league with 26 home runs, David Ortiz is right behind him with 24 home runs. David leads the league with 83 RBI while Manny is third with 77 ribbies.
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Overall I have to give the Sox fielding a C-, they have looked pathetic in games they've given up 67 unearned runs. That's just great fielding, errors have killed them early this season and if they want a chance to do anything in the playoffs they need to learn to field.
hitting they get an A-, sure they're not the powerhouse that they were last year but to still be in the top 5 in all the major batting stats is great.
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*
Well that's the blog

St. Louis Report Card

/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Welcome to today's Report Card, today we're going to focus on the Cardinals Manager and Starting Pitching Staff
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Ok let's start with Tony La Russa

In my opinion which is going to be bashed by one reader, I feel that La Russa is one of the best managers in the game today. This Cardinals club was told in the beginning of the year that they didn't have a chance since the Astros and the Cubs were still in their division and what does this team do they go and after one half of the season their in first place in the National League Central, 7 games up on the Cubs. Hell they have the best record in the National League, and there is only one person who I believe can take credit for this an dthat has to be Tony La Russa.
Grade A-
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Let's Start with Chris Carpenter

Chris in my opinion is a great pitcher, he showed that when he was with the Toronto Blue Jays. Carpenter is 9-4 with a 3.87 era. He's pitched 111.2 innings in his 17 starts. He averages 6.5 innings each time he pitches which is great for any National League club to have the feeling that you can keep a pitcher in the game this long instead of hitting for him.
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Now let's move on to Matt Morris

This season Matt is 10-6 with a 4.20 era. He's pitched 130.2 innings in his 19 starts. This is an incredible average of 6.85 innings per start. Matt Morris has helped the Cardinals by striking out 79, while only giving up 5 unearned runs. He's thrown a complete game and his WHIP is 1.22. When the Cardinals win the National League Central the key reason would be their Ace Matt Morris
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Moving on to former Sox Bum Jeff Suppan.

As we know I've never been a fan of Jeff Suppan because of how horriably he pitched when he was with the Sox. But he proved once again that he pitches much better in the National League than he does in the American League. He's 8-5 with a 3.33 era. He's pitched 105.1 innings in his 17 starts for an average of 6.18 innings per outing. Jeff Suppan has a few flaws this season, he's walked 28 while only striking out 65, which is an average of 2.32 strikeouts per walk which is extremely low. Opponents are batting a .257 and his WHIP is a 1.24. For the Cardinals to continue their success they need to have Suppan turn it up a notch.
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Moving on to one disapointment for the Cardinals this year would have to be Woody Williams.

Woody Williams this year is 6-6 with a 4.09 ERA. He only averages 6.06 innings per start. He only averages 1.73 strike outs per each walk, he's only pitched 103.1 innings while having a WHIP of 1.40. He really had a tough start when he went 0-2 in April, 2-3 in May, but since then he's 4-1 and his ERA has been 2.81 in June and 2.19 in July. Wood Williams is going to have a very strong second half.
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
On to Jason Marquis

Jason Marquis is 9-4 with a 3.88 ERA. He averages 6.24 innings per start. He averages 2.09 strikeouts to walks. His WHIP is a 1.43, but his opponents are batting a red hot .280. He's allowed 117 hits in only 106.2 innings pitched. He's only allowed 2 unearned runs, while strikeing out 73.
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
On to the Cardinals Closer; Jason Isringhausen

Jason has bene a great closer for the Cardinals, he has 21 saves, a record of 3-2 while pitching in 40 games. His era is 2.76, WHIP of 1.11 and an OBA of .200. He averages 2.3 strikeouts per walk. And he's only allowed one unearned run. For the Cardinals to continue their success they need to keep Isringhausen 100%, suppan to take it up a notch, for Williams to continue the red hot streak he's on.
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
The Cardinals pitching staff gets a B+

Recap of first half, with a Report Card

Readers it's that time again when it's time to recap the first half of the MLB season with a Report Card. Today's report card will feature two major teams then a brief report card on the rest of the teams, the two teams that will be featured will be the two teams that I've followed my whole life and those would be the Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals. (Note to Justin and Anna, I am also a Cards fan, I have been since I was on the Cardinals in T-Ball)
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Lets start with the Red Sox

/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-

Manager: Tito Francoma; In my opinion the worst manager in the game today. He has this team loaded with talent and they're not in first place. Often times he's shown on the bench sitting there wondering what to do, instead of warming up somebody in the pen, he instead decides to let his starters get shelled and when he starts to warm somebody up it's always too late. He gets a C-
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Starting Pitching

Over all the best starting pitcher ont he Red Sox this first half has to be the man that should have started the All Star Game and that's Curt Schilling. He is for some reason the Red Sox #2 starter while in the minds of most in the Boston Area he's #1. How good is this guy, well he has yet to lose at Fenway in his short Red Sox career. In 18 starts this year he's 11-4 with an era of 3.16. He's strucken out 118 while walking 21. His WHIP is 1.16 with an OBA of .257. He's also been a horse for the Sox by pitching 125.1 innings, which is an average of 6.95 innings a game, so not only is he pitching well but he's saving the bullpen. He has 2 complete games, and he's only allowed 2 unearned runs this whole year.
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-

The Sox #1 starter, in the minds of many the #2 starter, is Pedro Martinez. He's also put up some great numbers the first half, in 18 starts he's 9-3 with an era of 3.67. His whip is 1.13 while his OBA is .232. He also pitches an average of 6.51 innings a game which is huge for the Sox. He doesn't have any complete games but when they need Pedro to go deep into the game 9 times out of 10 he can go deep. Like Schilling, Pedro is also undefeated at home with a 6-0 record and an incredible WHIP of .99 at home.
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-

The Sox #3 Starter who has been acting more like their number 5 starter is Derek Lowe. Many fans in Boston would be ready to place Wakefield or Arroyo over Lowe and I have to agree with them. In 17 starts he's 7-8 with an era of 5.57. His WHIP is a 1.65 and opponents are hitting a .297 against him. He's only pitching 5.48 innings a game, this is a huge difference from his Cy young season 2 years ago, which I still feel he was robbed. He's given up 21 unearned runs which is 21 too many, an dhis strikeout to walk ratio is 46:41, which is pathetic. It's hard to believe this is the same pitcher who went 21-8 back in 2002 with an era of 2.58, and he was averaging 6.85 innings per outing. He also had a no hitter that season. Derek needs to make changes now before it's too late.
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-

Another huge disapointment has to be the Sox #4 starter Tim Wakefield. In 16 starts he's 5-5 with an era of 4.17. He's averaging 6.58 innings per start. His wihp is down 1.36, but his OBA is a .262. He's allowed 11 Unearned runs, and his K to walk ratio is 7:4.
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-

And the Sox #5 starter is Bronson Arroyo, he is in my opinion the third best pitcher on the Sox team, sure he's only 3-7 but he's pitching an average of 6.39 innings per start, his era the last two months have ben 4.18 in June and 1.20 in July. He's been lights out and the sad thing is his defense behind him has made 5 less errors than the rest of the starters combined. He's given up 14 unearned runs, and the Sox just don't hit when he's on the mound, they only average 3 runs a game when he pitches, which isn't going to win you many games nomadder who is pitching. His K:BB ratio is 67:28.
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Overall the Sox Starting Pitching gets a B. check back tomorrow when I recap the Cardinals Manager and Starting Pitcher, on Saturday a report on the Sox hitting and fielding, while on Sunday we get the Cards hitting and fielding report.

Harrelson-Mariotti name-calling feud heats up

By Teddy Greenstein
Tribune staff reporter

July 2, 2004, 10:57 PM CDT

Jay Mariotti likes to tell his morning radio listeners not to focus so much on him.

"It's not about me," he said earlier this week on WMVP-AM 1000. "It's about the teams."

Maybe, but lately Mariotti has been a story.

The Sun-Times sports columnist and regular on ESPN's "Around the Horn" went nose-to-nose Wednesday with White Sox broadcaster Hawk Harrelson in the the press box at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

At one point, witnesses say, Mariotti told Harrelson: "I ought to clock you right now."

Harrelson's response: "Go ahead. Do what you've got to do, Jay."

The two have been feuding in print and on air since SoxFest, when Harrelson called Mariotti "the biggest sports fraud" and added: "Mariotti wouldn't know a good or bad team if he saw one … In six or seven years, I've never seen him in the clubhouse."

Days later Mariotti wrote: "Now that official team puppet Hawk Harrelson has targeted me as Osama Sox Laden—the one and only reason why the ballmall is obsolete, the fan base is shrinking and bad drunks rush the field and attack people—allow me to use my almighty powers in a more productive manner."

Since then, Mariotti has written about Harrelson four times, describing him as "[Chairman Jerry] Reinsdorf's shameless mouthpiece," "whiny … bitter" and sounding "like he's constipated."

Harrelson has struck back on his telecasts, most recently after Mariotti likened U.S. Cellular Field to a "state penitentiary" after describing a fight in the stands. But the two men didn't cross paths until about an hour before Wednesday's Sox-Twins game.

Harrelson was walking to the TV booth, taking the required route past the back row of the press box. There's not much room to maneuver, and Mariotti, talking on his cell phone to ESPN program director Len Weiner, was leaning back in his chair.

Harrelson said he "brushed" past the chair, unaware of who was sitting in it.

Mariotti said Harrelson "rammed into him," prompting Mariotti to tell him: "Watch where you're going."

The incident grew heated, with Harrelson and Mariotti yelling insults at each other.

Witnesses say Mariotti, after rising from his chair, came within three to four inches of Harrelson and said: "I ought to clock you right now."

After more name-calling, witnesses say Mariotti told Harrelson: "You want a lawsuit? I can make you a poor man."

Mariotti denied that he threatened to sue Harrelson.

"No," he said. "There was an exchange. He was yelling silly things that are beneath me. He needs to be a professional. Am I going up to his [TV] booth and yelling at him? If I did, would that be a violation? Yes. End of story."

Not quite. After the game, Harrelson said he and analyst Darrin Jackson saw Mariotti working alone in the press box while other writers were in the clubhouses.

Harrelson said he told Mariotti: "'Now, Jay, have a nice evening.' And he muttered something I couldn't make out."

Mariotti said the incident occurred while he and others were on deadline. "You don't come into a press box after a game and start yelling at a guy when writers are on deadline," Mariotti said. "He's thoroughly unprofessional."

But not even that marked the end of the dispute.

A friend of Harrelson's called him Friday morning to report that Mariotti had said on his radio show, "I can pinch his beak off any time I want to," referring to Harrelson.

That prompted Harrelson to call the station and ask producer Shaun Witt to put him on the air. Witt declined, telling Harrelson: "Jay said he'd take a pass."

Harrelson called Mariotti "gutless" and told Witt: "Just tell Jay that next time he comes to U.S. Cellular Field, I'll give him a chance to pinch my beak off."

Mariotti denied having referred to Harrelson on his Friday morning show.

Witt said late Friday morning that he would review a tape of the show. But he never reported its contents and didn't return phone messages left for him.

Mariotti said he declined to put Harrelson on the air because "I have no interest in these silly little things. I am above that. I'm trying to do a radio show. The White Sox just need to play baseball and stop worrying about the media. That goes for him too."

Mariotti attributes his dispute with Harrelson to a "10-year war" between him and the Sox.

"Jerry Reinsdorf," Mariotti said, "is trying to get one of his trusted longtime hands to goad me, whether it's on the air or in the press box, to do something that will perhaps end my radio career on his flagship station. I'll never do anything that stupid. That is what the story is here.

"I am provoked constantly and it's in my best interests to walk away," Mariotti said. "I have been provoked by athletes, owners, their sons, writers and broadcasters a good 15 to 20 times in this city and every time I have walked away. How many other people would?"

Mariotti said he is "appalled" that so many people want to confront him.

"These people need to get me off the brain," he said. "I'm not worth it. I'm just a guy in the media. I'm trying to lay low."

Suicide watch in Boston

Boston be ready for a Suicide watch after the Sox had a horrible 3 days in New York, and I mean horrible. During this series the Sox were not only outplayed, but they were out run, outlast, outwit, and this isn't Survivor here. If this was we'd already be searching for Jeff Probst to put out our torch so we could finally get off this crazy island we call Survivor Red Sox Nation. What the Red Sox and their fans right now are going through is perfect reality TV, with the exception that what can go wrong always will. The Sox yesterday finally listened to my plea to keep Nomar off of the playing field and to move Pokey over to short, and here's a surprise the Red Sox didn't have one error last night, not one. With a starting infield of McCarty, Bellhorn, Reese and Youkilis they started to capture that fight that we were seeing before Trot and Nomar came back. We were told that all we had to do is stay close until Trot and Nomar came back and now that they're back we're left wondering why we were waiting for them at all, since they've come back we have the third worst record in the Major Leagues, behind Arizona and Anaheim. When Trot and Nomar came back all of our problems were going to be solved, instead new problems have arrived such as how much does Nomar want to be here? Last night with two outs in the bottom of the 13th inning the whole Red Sox team, coaches and Jim Rowe included were standing up waiting for the final strike, that is all except Nomar who just sat on the bench with a look of disgust on his face.
Red Sox Nation we've finally found our first baseman in David McCarty. Last night we didn't boot any balls, he caught everything that came his way. He even stole a base, something that our first basemen this year of Ortiz and Millar can't claim. Millar is a player that I'm still trying to figure out why he's playing, he grounded into 2 of the Sox 4 double plays last night, he batted a red hot 0-6, plus he misjudged a ball in the bottom of the 13th that cost the Sox the game. I can understand running for Ortiz with Gabe Kapler but why not then put Kapler in the game, sure you lose the DH but the Yankees weren't afraid to lose the DH, they just used the DH spot to hit John Flaherty with the game winning ground rule double.
Again without Nomar there was great defense played by the Sox as they were able to turn 2 key double plays when they needed them. And there was a highlight catch coming from the Evil Empire when Derek Jeter ran full speed caught the ball and then a second later found himself enjoying the games with the fans in the first few rows, has Nomar ever shown this type of effort?
It's horrible to think that Manny Ramirez could hit 2 shots, one to center in the 6th inning and another in the 13th to left, and they still can't score more than 4 runs. Looking back on the series the Sox lost game one 11-3, game two 4-2 and then again last night 5-4 in 13 innings, told to wait and just stay close until Nomar and Trot came back, now we just want Nomar to trot out of Boston.

FIRE TITO

/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
And now for some Jeers and Cheers, maybe
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Well my friends at TV Guide have told me that I can no longer use the tag lines Jeers and Cheers so I've recreated Jeers and Cheers and made it Chaggs and Zags.
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Chaggs to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, where did this momentum boost come from? Before you know it these guys are going to go and pass the Red Sox for second place in the AL East
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Zags to the Boston Red Sox. Can these guys win at all. Nomar needs to be traded, get rid of him he doesn't want to be there. Get Pokey back at short, youks at Third.
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Zags to Tito (the Sox manager), why do you have Kevin Millar or David Ortiz at First Base? And why are you playing Millar at all, did he catch you cheating on your wife or something. He's horriable and the only good thing he's good for is that he's a leader, well make him a coach but don't let him play. tito you also need to have Dave McCarty play first base, he can field and hit which is more than Bozo the clown AKA Kevin Millar can say. What hair do is next, the Donald Trump Look.
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Chaggs to the Pittsburgh Pirates for their sweep over the red hot St. Louis Cardinals, I'm shocked I didn't think this could happen, but don't worry the Cards are still going to win the NL Central
/*-/*-/*-/*-/*-
Zags to NBC sports who are covering Wimbledon, they gave results to the matches that were about to be shown on ESPN, thanks for ruining my day since I canceled plans to watch Sprems match the other day, ok so maybe I have a thing for Sprem but have you seen her?
